Promoting Your Local Business Through Community Outreach

Editor’s Note: The following is a guest post published by permission of its author.

Promoting a local business is an ongoing challenge. Placing ads in newspapers, putting up signs and running ad campaigns on TV and radio are becoming less and less relevant due to changes in consumer behavior. What does work today is creating user-friendly content on your website & blog and becoming involved on social media. These methods, when done correctly, can help build awareness, drive interest from patients and increase your business.

New Call-to-action

Community Outreach Shows Your Human Side
While it is important to update your website and blog with fresh, useful content and to maintain a strong social media presence, it’s equally important that you get away from your computer and go out and meet other members of your community. By doing so, you’ll be able to build more personal relationships while putting a face to your business name.

When you take the time to do good on the local level, you’ll make connections and build your reputation. By doing something like sponsoring a little league team or a local 5K run, you’ll make your community a better place to live and work while promoting your practice, making it a clear win-win situation.

Think Creatively When Brainstorming Your Community Outreach Efforts
Be creative when thinking of how you can reach out to your local community. Maybe one time each year you could host a community meet-and-greet BBQ or organize a local food drive. If you find it difficult to come up with something to do, visit your local chamber of commerce to find out what organizations, causes and individuals are in need of assistance.

Remember that people like to do business with those they know and trust. By establishing yourself as a solid presence in your community you’ll be doing your part while giving others the chance to get to know you. When you put forth some effort in bettering your local community, you will gain appreciation for your good deeds. And, when you show you care, people will be more likely to patronize your practice as a response to the good you’ve done.

Link Building Through Community Involvement
Sponsorships and community involvement are great ways to gain visibility for your practice, as banners, billboards, T-shirts, fliers and TV spots are often involved. When you align your practice with events like marathons and food drives, you’ll gain visibility and credibility in a very cost-effective manner. Additionally, sponsorships and community involvement open up some great link building opportunities. You could ask to have your link put on local community websites, newspapers, school sites, little league sites, etc.

When done correctly and with passion, giving back to your local community can increase your visibility, amp up sales, help with SEO and generate PR opportunities. However, the benefits your practice can reap should not be your primary motivating factor. By putting your genuine interest and passion first ahead of business promotion and link building, you’ll be able to leverage these other benefits as well. Doing good should be your primary focus while keeping in mind the positive impact that good can have on your practice.
