Medical practices adhering to regulations developed by the Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act are running into issues while trying to meet compliance requirements. The issue: the rates at which regulatory updates and technology advancements progress are much faster than the rate at which many medical practices can upgrade internal processes.
How much faster you ask? So much so that many healthcare providers are completely unaware of the Final Omnibus Rule from HIPAA issued in 2013! In fact, about 36% of medical office professionals maintain an inadequate understanding of HIPAA regulations, and approximately 33% struggle to comprehend the audit strategies issued by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office for Civil Rights.
Such knowledge gaps can result in crippling fines of up to $50,000 per HIPAA violation with a cap at $1.5 million. In order to ensure facility and patient data security, medical practices need to make sure they are up-to-date on all HIPAA changes.
